The Reason Why Women Live Longer Than Men Essay Example for Free
The Reason Why Women Live Longer Than Men Essay Scientists are finally beginning to understand one of lifeââ¬â¢s enduring mysteries why women live, on average, longer than men. The new research describes how mutations to the DNA of the mitochondria can account for differences in the life expectancy of males and females. Mitochondria, which exist in almost all animal cells, are vital for life because they convert our food into the energy that powers the body. Dr Damian Dowling and PhD student Florencia Camus, from Monash School of Biological Sciences in the U. S., worked with Dr David Clancy from Lancaster University to uncover differences in longevity and biological ageing across male and female fruit flies that carried mitochondria of different origins. They found that genetic variation across these mitochondria were reliable predictors of life expectancy in males, but not in females. Dr Dowling said the results point to numerous mutations within mitochondrial DNA that affect how long males live, and the speed at which they age. He said: Intriguingly, these same mutations have no effects on patterns of ageing in females they only affect males. All animals possess mitochondria, and the tendency for females to outlive males is common to many different species. Our results therefore suggest that the mitochondrial mutations we have uncovered will generally cause faster male ageing across the animal kingdom. The researchers said the mutations can be entirely attributed to a quirk in the way that mitochondrial genes are passed down from parents to offspring. Dr Dowling said: While children receive copies of most of their genes from both their mothers and fathers, they only receive mitochondrial genes from their mothers. This means that evolutionââ¬â¢s quality control process, known as natural selection, only screens the quality of mitochondrial genes in mothers. If a mitochondrial mutation occurs that harms fathers, but has no effect on mothers, this mutation will slip through the gaze of natural selection, unnoticed. Over thousands of generations, many such mutations have accumulated that harm only males, while leaving females unscathed. The study builds on previous findings by Dr Dowling and his team who investigated the consequences of maternal inheritance of mitochondria in causing male infertility. Dr Dowling added: Together, ourà research shows that the mitochondria are hotspots for mutations affecting male health. What we seek to do now is investigate the genetic mechanisms that males might arm themselves with to nullify the effects of these harmful mutations and remain healthy.

Essay --
ââ¬Å"America the land of opportunities is currently going through one of the worst poverty rates in over 50 yearsâ⬠said Michael Karibian researcher and journalist on poverty. Many people are in poverty and they have no one to blame but themselves. People remain in poverty for the reason that they do not have the desire to change and be successful and take charge of their own life; anyone can avoid poverty although the problem is peopleââ¬â¢s attitudes towards change. It can be easy to simply give up and blame others for their misfortune but in reality those people only have themselves to blame for their own misfortune in life. Getting out of poverty is difficult but it is not impossible for those who are willing to take control of their lives and no longer be a victim of thee own mistakes. America has opportunities for everyone who desires to avoid poverty by making smart choices, getting a good education and neglecting bad influences. People are quick to blame the government for all the poverty in America when in reality they only have themselves to blame for their own misfortune. ââ¬Å"They didnââ¬â¢t run as fast as everyone else, and if they ran faster, theyââ¬â¢d do betterâ⬠said Allan G. Johnson. The point of this quote is that if people do not try to get themselves back up they will not succeed and stay where they are at. It is true that there are uncontrollable external factors built into politics that can intensify the challenges to make the smartest choices, which are not always the easiest or obvious, but the blame must be placed on individuals because poverty has a partial but direct correlation to individuals choices they make. A reason for the poverty rates in America are because communities have established a poverty culture. An article ... ... the line by trying them. Girls who get pregnant at a young age have no one to blame but themselves unless they were raped. All these things can happen to both rich people and poor people although people that live in poverty will have a harder time getting past all the negative influences then rich people, but that does not mean it is not impossible for them to have a successful life as long they focus on being successful anyone form any background can make it in life. Living in poverty is not a matter of bad luck it is a matter of individuals lacking the determination to be someone in life and always trying to take the easy way out. Those who are determined in life can be anything they want no matter their background. America has opportunities for everyone who desires to avoid poverty by making smart choices, getting a good education and neglecting bad influences.

The Mercury Symbol Essay -- Sex Gender Crossdresser Transsexual Essays
The Mercury Symbol My momââ¬â¢s former boyfriend Rick, now known as Andrea, became a woman over a decade ago. Andrea is a transgender person whom the Mercury symbol represents. For transgender people, the Mercury symbol stands for their personal inner striving to become the gender they feel they were meant to be, equality, and pride. Happily, Andrea and my mom have remained friends since she became a woman. For many people who cross the gender line, acceptance does not always come so easily. Transgender is defined as appearing, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member the opposite sex. There are many terms for or associated with transgender people, which people may also link to the Mercury symbol, such as transvestite, transsexual, crossdresser, intersexed (Wellesley College). The symbol is meant to express the balance of feminine and masculine traits within an individual. Some transgender people are open about their feelings while others, for fear of societal rejection, hide their pain for years and sometimes forever. The Mercury symbol dates back to ancient Greek mythology. Hermes (Mercury) and Aphrodite (Venus) had a child that possessed both male and female sexual organs. They named the child Hermaphroditus, which is where the term hermaphrodite originally came from. The Mercury symbol is made up of three parts: the crescent moon, the cross, and the ring. The crescent moon represents masculinity, while the cross represents the feminine and the ring stands for the individual surrounded by the struggle with gender. (forPLU) In todayââ¬â¢s society, it is not easy to be an openly transgendered person and wear this symbol on your sleeve. Most people fear what is different... ... strength they show by changing their gender and way of life. Glass Menagerie Essay Essay
Have you ever read the book The Glass Menagerie and seen the movie? There are more similarities between the book and the movie version than there are differences. The movie does have some small differences but the movie script is almost identical to the script of the play. They both have the same setting and all the scenes take place in the apartment of the Wingfields. All the characters also remain the same consisting of only Amanda Wingfield, her children Tom and Laura, and Jim Oââ¬â¢Connor (the gentleman caller). There were many technological aspects of the play and the movie that were different. Some things that were done in the movie could not be done in the play. For example, in the movie, you can see the scene from different views and different frames. Also, in the movie, the actorââ¬â¢s backs could be towards the audience, but actors canââ¬â¢t do that on stage in a play. Lastly, in the movie, music was played in the background during the scenes, which is something that wasnââ¬â¢t done in the play. Some of Lauraââ¬â¢s features that are in the play are also different in the movie. Laura had a brace on her leg during high school because of a disability but the brace was no longer on during the movie. In the movie, Laura seemed like a normal person and you would probably not even be able to tell there was anything wrong with her if her family didnââ¬â¢t show such and exaggeration of her being a cripple. Amanda also acts like she was still young expecting gentleman callers at any moment and in the movie the actress that plays Amanda seems way to old, I would have used someone a bit younger. When Jim comes over, Amanda flirts with him like she is the one trying to marry him instead of Laura. Tom also seems different in the movie. In the movie he is kind of creepy and it seems like he does not care much for his family and is just waiting for the chance to leave. In the play he seems like a good person who wants to do the best for his family but wants to get out. Similarities are more common between the play and movie. As I mentioned before, the scripts are almost identical to one another and there are only a few sections in which the movie strays from what is written in the book. Most of the characters, with the exception of Amanda, follow the personalities that are described in the play. The apartment is also set upà the same way as it was in the play. Even outside the apartment was the same with the dance hall in the alley and the fire escape. The story lines of both the play and movie were also the same. The movie differs little from the book with the exception of the differences above. In comparing the play, The Glass Menagerie, to the movie, they are very similar in most ways. The differences lie in the personalities of the characters themselves and how they are portrayed. It seems like when creating the movie they chose to stick as close to the play as possible.

Arts Research Paper Topics #038; Ideas Even though it can appear that studying arts is much easier than exact sciences such as physics or mathematics, the practice demonstrates that students frequently face particular difficulties with this subject. The reason is that arts comprise multiple branches such as visual, literary, performing, and other arts, and fully understanding and researching them can be challenging even for scholars. Nevertheless, the importance of studying arts cannot be overestimated due to various reasons. Firstly, art allows people to look at the world from a different perspective, to experience someone elseââ¬â¢s way of seeing things, to develop oneââ¬â¢s creative thinking, and to broaden the worldview. Secondly, taking into account that people were creating art throughout the history of humankind, its various pieces represent experience and culture of humanity at different stages of development. When a professor demands you to write a research paper on arts, you should decide on a topic first. Books Every Student Should Read - EssaySupply.com
Books Every Student Should Read Books Every Student Should Read When college students become intently focused on their classes and working towards their degrees, many wonderful things happen. For one thing, students begin developing their critical thinking skills at a rapid pace. They learn to form ideas and opinions, interact with others in discussions about those ideas and opinions, and ultimately improve and modify their opinions and ideas based on these interactions. College students also spend a lot of time reading and absorbing information that is directly related to their studies. On one hand, this is a good thing. They are learning and absorbing the information that they need to learn. On the other hand, this doesn't leave much time for other reading. This is a shame, because there are so many books that college students should be reading that can teach them life lessons, inspire them, or simply provide a bit of reprieve. So, we have decided to step away from our 'day job' of providing research paper, essay, thesis, and dissertation writi ng help to go over a few books that we believe every college student should read. Fish Author: Steven Lundin When we began discussing this book, one of our staff members recalled her first flight on Southwest Airlines. The flight attendant was giving the standard instructions about emergency exits, oxygen masks, and flotation devices. Then, at the end of the presentation the flight attendant began to offer some additional advice. She began, ' for those of you who are traveling with children...' '...bummer.' Her perfectly timed, dead-pan delivery earned her laughs from both the passengers and the crew. The loudest laughs actually came from the parents she had targeted. If you have ever wondered where the famously irreverent culture at Southwest originates, the answer is this book. It is based on a woman who comes to the realization that among other things people must find a way to have fun at work. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Author: Stephen Covey This is a classic, but still amazingly relevant book that provides its readers with action steps that one can take at any age to achieve their goals. Students who are looking for very specific information on improving their lives can definitely learn from this book. The Automatic Millionaire Author: David Bach Many students don't realize that they can begin building wealth right now. David Bach provides many tips in his book that go well beyond the typical advice that students receive about financial issues. Some of his advice includes living below your means and directing money towards valuable purchases that benefit the entire family. The Tao of Pooh Author: Benjamin Hoff It is easy to envision Winnie the Pooh as an adorable literary character who has delighted children for decades, but are you ready to view the adorable bear as an Eastern philosopher? The Tao of Pooh asks you to do just that, and in turn provides amazing perspective. If it sounds unrealistic, take a moment to consider the characters. Piglet worries, Rabbit micromanages, Owl detaches, and Tigger acts out. Pooh simply is.
