Big And Working Girl, Corporate America Essays - Films, Working Girl
Big And Working Girl, Corporate America Stephen Ferruzza Professor Housel March 8, 2000 Essay # 2 Opinions and views that take place in Hollywood movies are intended to be realistic. To the viewer, the plots and stories seem so believable that reality becomes faded and a simulated world becomes present inside their minds. In the movies Big and Working girl, Corporate America is portrayed actually the way it is. The atmosphere in Corporate America has progressed toward a higher complexity. The education and skills needed to succeed must be met to rise the corporate ladder. Tess strives to better herself by taking speech class and attending seminars. Tess's knowledge and ambition also gave her the necessary advantage to enter into an esteemed brokerage firm. Here she was left with the desire to reach the top of corporate America(Working Girl). Taking the steps of going to school and acquiring a degree are key to the rise in Corporate America. Josh took a different path to the top. Without proper education, josh relied on his childish ways to succeed. Josh had insight that no one else in corperate America could posses. His creativity led him to design toys that kids liked to play with. Josh knew what the children wanted to play with because he was a customer. Because of his great creativity he was promoted vice president. As vice president in the toy company, josh made valuable contributions t o the company.(Big) In both movies, knowledge and skill was key to being successful. Without valuable contributions that both characters made, rising to the top would have taken years. Greed, scandals, favors, and corruption all take place in Corporate America. At the top of the ladder these evils start. With ultimate power over everyone below, co-workers beg for mercy. People in this world are greedy and will do anything to be powerful and successful. If you are honest, truthful, and work hard then you will be rewarded. The morals and ethics that both Josh and Tess practice made them good choices for promotions. Many things effect promotions including hard work. To rise up depends on the people you know and the way you act. Tess overcame the corruption that surrounding her. She stuck up for her ideas and was free to express her impressing ideas. Tess was told by her boss that only she could make it happen and she did. Because of greed or favors foul relationships happen within an office. Tess had to deal with her male boss trying to seduce her. Tess, needing a better job, was easy game for powerful executives looking for favors.(Working Girl) Harassment such as these happen numerous times throughout both movies. The truth is that it does happen more than a few times in the workplace. Recently however, new laws have been made to protect from such evilness. Harassment laws and awareness have still not done enough to stop abuse in the workplace because of the desire to get ahead. All the relationships within the movies are very realistic. Everyone is out to get ahead and however you get there seems fine. The politics that are involved inside the workplace are clearly shown when Tess gets a new female boss. Tess is told to share her ideas and make things happen. But when Tess shares a good idea the boss plans to steal it for her own to make her look good. (Working Girl) Scandals and corruption are common in real life and the movies clearly indicate the truth. Mixing pleasure with business also occurs in Corporate America. Business that happens during social gatherings is present in both movies. The way Tess dresses and acts, is clear that politics are important. Seduction and deception also take place during this event. The movies show everyone shaming and deceiving everybody to get noticed by the boss. Getting ahead in Corporate America takes lots of fakeness. Taking the boss to dinner or out to golf is what can lead to promotions. Getting on the good side of the boss is pointed out in big. When josh makes a bond with the boss at the toy store he immediately got a raise and a new office .(Big) Making good impressions and being a patsy is

Roberto del Rosario, Inventor of a Karaoke Machine
Roberto del Rosario, Inventor of a Karaoke Machine Roberto del Rosario (1936ââ¬â2007) was the president of the now-defunct Trebel Music Corporation, a founding member of the Filipino amateur jazz band The Executives Band Combo, and, in 1975, the inventor of the Karaoke Sing Along System. Known as Bert, del Rosario patented more than 20 inventions during his lifetime, making him one of the most prolific of Filipino inventors. Fast Facts: Roberto del Rosario Known For: Holds the 1975 patent for the Karaoke Sing-Along SystemBorn: 1936 in Pasay City, PhilippinesParents: Teofilo del Rosario and Consolacion LegaspiDied: August 2003Education: No formal musical educationSpouse: Eloisa Vistan (d. 1979)Children: 5 Early Life Roberto del Rosario was born in Pasay City, Philippines, in 1936, the son of Teofilo del Rosario and Consolacion Legaspi. He never received formal music education but learned to play the piano, drums, marimba, and xylophone by ear. He was a founding member of The Executive Combo Band, a well-known amateur jazz band headed by post-World War II Filipino politician Raà ºl Sevilla Manglapus and architect Francisco Bobby Maà ±osa. The band started in 1957 and played in gigs all over the world, jamming with the likes of Duke Ellington and Bill Clinton.à Roberto del Rosario married Eloisa Vistan and together they had five children; Eloisa died in 1979. In Taytay, Rizal- under the business name Trebel (Treb is Bert spelled backwards and El is for his wife)- del Rosario manufactured harpsichords and the OMB, or One-Man-Band, a piano with a built-in synthesizer, rhythm box, and bass pedals that can all be played at the same time. He also developed and patented a singalong machine using minus one technology (originally on cassette tapes) in which vocals are subtracted from extant instrumental tracks. Del Rosario is one of several people who are associated with the invention of a karaoke machine. Karaoke is a compound Japanese word from karappo meaning empty and o-kestura meaning orchestra. Sometimes translated as empty orchestra, the phrase means something closer to the orchestra is void of vocals. Music Minus One Minus one technology has its roots in classical music recording. The Music Minus One company was founded in 1950 in Westchester, New York by classical music student Irv Kratka: Their products are professional musical recordings with one track, vocal or instrumental, removed, for the purpose of allowing a musician to practice along with the professionals at home. Multi-track recording was developed in 1955, and the technology to remove one track became available to professional musicians and publishers afterward, primarily to allow them to adjust the track balance or rerecord them to get a better sound. By the 1960s, Minus one technology was used by migrant Filipino musical personnel, who used the technology at the request of their promoters and record labels, who wanted to save costs by hiring fewer musicians. In 1971, Daisuke Inoue was a keyboard and vibraphone backup player in a high-end Kobe, Japan, bar, and his abilities were in great demand at customer parties. A customer wanted him to perform at a party but he was too busy, and he recorded the backup music on tape and gave it to the customer. After that, Inoue assembled a team of an electronics specialist, a woodworker, and a furniture finisher, and together they built the first karaoke machine using 8-track tapes, complete with microphone and echo effect, called the 8-Juke. Inoue leased his 8-Juke machines to working-class bars lacking the budget to hire live, in-house musicians in the nightlife hub of Kobe. His coin-operated 8-Juke machines featured Japanese standards and popular tracks recorded by backing musicians without vocals in 1971ââ¬â1972. He clearly created the first karaoke machine, but didnt he patent or profit from it- and later he denied he was an inventor at all, claiming he simply combined a car stereo, a coin box, and a small amp. The Sing Along System Roberto del Rosario invented his version of a karaoke machine between 1975 and 1977, and in his patents (UM-5269 on June 2, 1983 and UM-6237 on November 14, 1986) he described his sing-along system as a handy, multi-purpose, compact machine that incorporates an amplifier speaker, one or two tape mechanisms, an optional tuner or radio, and a microphone mixer with features to enhance ones voice, such as the echo or reverb to simulate an opera hall or a studio sound. The whole system was enclosed in one cabinet casing. The main reason we know of del Rosarios contribution is because he sued Japanese companies for patent infringement in the 1990s. In the court case, the Philippine Supreme Court decided in del Rosarios favor. He won the legal recognition and some of the money, but in the end, the Japanese manufacturers reaped most of the benefits by later innovations. Other Inventions Besides his famous Karaoke Sing Along System Roberto del Rosario has also invented: Trebel Voice Color Code (VCC)Piano tuners guidePiano keyboard stressing deviceVoice color tape Sources Music Minus One. Usability Engineering Quantitative Analysis Assignment
Usability Engineering Quantitative Analysis - Assignment Example The fields that were selected were: What did you read? , what was the reading medium? , what was the reason for reading? , what was your native language? , How old are you? And do you know any other languages? The data on gender in regard to whether one was male or female was deemed to be unsuitable for analysis since the number of males exceeds that of females by a far large margin. The missing data was filled using the results from the frequency distribution tables for the selected data and the redundancy that existed in the dataset was removed. Some fields such as the use of lectures notes was merged with paperwork and the use of slides was merged with the use of lecture slides. Data about websites was combined under the umbrella of websites. The descriptive statistics for the selected fields were computed as shown in the table below Through analysis of the statistics obtained in the table above, it emerged that the question of what was most read by the respondents was obtained through the mode. 128 people were determined to have read their emails. The laptop was found to be the most commonly used medium. A total of 380 respondents indicated that they had used their laptops to read. Most of the respondents indicated that English was their native language. The number of persons who were determined to have indicated that English was their native language was 72. The highest number of respondents also indicated that they were 25 years of age or younger as compared to those who were over 25 years old. The highest number of the respondents also indicated that they had knowledge of more than one language compared to those who were unilingual. This narrows down to 1.29 % using e readers while 12.56 % used papers as a media. These results from the sample population indicate that the people prefer to use the traditional medium of communication as compared to the modern media. A further analysis of the data on the media used

The relevance of employee engagement indices Essay
The relevance of employee engagement indices - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that employee engagement is a crucial element that influences business operations in most institutions. It facilitates democratic participation and administration of resources, for example, human resources that enhance morale. Managers are obligated to formulate superior employee engagement procedures that include the adoption of structured lines of communication, although others do not. This is to facilitate communication and formulation of superior performance strategies that focus on the participation of everyone. Employee engagement remains a hot issue with most professionals posting a diverse opinion on its suitability in measuring performance in institutions. One school of thought reports that employee engagement indices criteria form a fundamental element that provides relevant incentives for measuring performance. It acts as a scorecard guideline that measures the satisfactory level of employees and consumers in service delivery. Ho wever, another school of thought faults its use since it fails to provide clear benchmarks that can be applied to facilitate credible measurement of performance. Ideally, employees hold the requisite capacity of influencing performance in institutions. To ensure superior innovation and creativity in product development, proper employee engagement is essential. It ensures adequate sharing of ideas and formulation of policies with innovative ideas. It is crucial to note that, employee performance can be achieved when their morale is enhanced through adequate engagement in diverse aspects.

The Connection Between Urbanisation And Pollution Essay
The Connection Between Urbanisation And Pollution - Essay Example In fact, humans have become too dependent on technology as life uncovers day by day. Due to high capacity of human to think and because of their growing needs as population also increases, major places on earth have become so congested and it further resulted to unnecessary processes with major impacts for the society in general. In this paper, the proponent tries to examine the link between urbanisation and pollution. In doing so, the proponent tries to define first the basic concepts of urbanisation and pollution. What is urbanisation? The presented classic definition of urbanisation is a process by which people and their increasing population densely occupy urban areas or towns (Ohngren, 1981). Urbnisation therefore is a process that tries to consider the need of the society for development based on the human standard and needs. Witherick (1999) emphasises that urbanisation is a process but it constitutes some important changes particularly in line with the economy, population dis tribution, change of the way of life, settlementââ¬â¢s sizes and character change. This only emphasises the fact that there are major changes and shift from an ordinary way of living to another level. This is what concerns the population in general because behind all these changes are impacts that require substantial considerations. What is pollution? The vast changes on earth which some of them resulted to pollution are eventually products of human activities (Hill, 2010). Hill focused on environmental pollutions as eventual results of human activities on earth. Pollution comes in wide range and faces. However, when one hears about pollution what comes to mind first are results of human activities since nature by itself is capable of maintaining the needed balance. However, all those activities done by humans are responsible for the destruction of such balance in nature and which eventually result at some point to environmental pollution. This is what Hill would like to emphasiz e that humans are capable of destroying the balance of nature in order to obtain the needs and wants of the society as in line with the contexts of political, economical, social, technological, legal and environmental considerations. Pollution is everywhere around the globe and it can be in different forms. It can be classified as air, water or land pollution. These pollutions are of varying degrees and most of them are results of industrial revolution from the past and at recent sophistication of our time. The use of technology finds ways for its further development and such also results to creation of things that pave way to environmental pollution. The global warming is said to be an impact of industrial revolution since such is said to be due to the polluted atmosphere with green house gases emitted by technologically advanced society. Pollution such as emission of green house gases is said to be on its fast pace especially in highly industrialised or developed countries. The Un ited States for instance is said to be among of the major countries with high contribution of emitted green house gases such as carbon dioxide due to the nature of its industry. This therefore has an important implication that cities are among of the top contributors of pollution on earth. Thus, this leads to further understanding of the existing relationship between the incident of pollution and urbanisation. These two are processes but at some point, the former is said to be the result of the latter. Pollution as an impact of urbanisation Political, social and economic aspects of a nation are interrelated to its physical environment because of the presence of potential human actions in every day (Middleton, 2008). One of the most important connections

Why the Employee Engagement Survey is Out of Date
Why the Employee Engagement Survey is Out of Date May 25, 2015 Abstract The objective of this project is to examine a current article and determine the capacity to analysis the current event by developing a rational summary (Schinker, 2015). This article is about the review of a somewhat outdated management method that has recently been given an updated title. The company examined within the article can be any kind of general company and is intended to be used as an illustration of what any company is able of transforming (Schinker, 2015). This is article is intended to demonstration what is not functioning within a company and how that company can go about revamping their method of providing an enjoyable work experience. Current Event Summarization The article that I found for my current event was ââ¬Å"Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?â⬠and is basically a summarization of another article titled ââ¬Å"Its Time To Rethink The Employee Engagement Issueâ⬠with an ultimate resolution. So to begin the author of ââ¬Å"Its Time To Rethink The Employee Engagement Issueâ⬠is Josh Bersin and based off of my article he argues that the conventional yearly engagement survey is invalid and unnecessary (Red, 2015). Bersin asks for more of an all-inclusive, unified, and instantaneous method to assessing and pushing for greater amounts of associate dedication and desire (Bersin, 2014). The most noted yearly engagement survey developer was actually Gallup who created the initial survey over 30 years ago (Bersin, 2014). Gallup was initially motivated by the industrial engineer Frederick Taylorââ¬â¢s work of the late-1800s (Bersin, 2014). Taylor was the first to notice the increased associate satisfaction on the steel businessââ¬â¢ production rates (Bersin, 2014). My article continues to explain that Bersin has an argument that allows us to understand that this old evaluation standard is no longer applicable due to the fact that there are currently too many types of surveying tools used to gauge associate engagement (Red, 2015). The first reason why this evaluation standard is no longer applicable is because the standard is just too constricted (Red, 2015). Based off of my article Bersin implies that the conventional engagement survey is not as comprehensive as it could be (Red, 2015). Developing work societies mean redefining most management designs, the job atmosphere, and even the labor force itself which normally are excluded from most surveys (Red, 2015). Therefore, Bersin goes on to state that companies have to look past these aspects of engagement and come up with innovated ways to make their associates feel wanted and cherished (Red, 2015). Types of ways my article says this is possible could be by providing snack rooms, rooms to relax in, and even ways to eliminate stress such as yoga or a masseuses (Red, 2015). The other reason why this evaluation standard is no longer applicable is because the term engagement is misleading (Red, 2015). Based off of my article it states that Bersin even has a problem with the term ââ¬Å"engagementâ⬠he says that engaging a companyââ¬â¢s associates is no longer adequate (Red, 2015). He says that a companyââ¬â¢s associates have to ready to commit or marry the company (Red, 2015). Yet, the only way this would be possible is by establishing a company that makes their associates want to come to work (Red, 2015). Based off of the article Bersin feels that it would be best if companies began utilizing a new evaluation standard besides the conventional yearly engagement survey (Red, 2015). With that said a new method that companies could adopt would be by gauging the delight and career fulfillment on a regular basis (Red, 2015). By placing instantaneous reaction instruments to a companyââ¬â¢s associates it allows these associates to straightforwardly convey their emotions to management so that they can control any disputes before that become overwhelming (Red, 2015). The article also states that based off of Bersinââ¬â¢s perspective that associates should be viewed as the core to a companyââ¬â¢s production instead of as just cogs in the machine, which can be interpreted by saying that instead of a company working their associates to the bone that they could utilize the new method mentioned above and make themselves seductive to the associates and they will engage themselves much more o ften (Red, 2015). Current Event Determination Earlier this week we discussed a topic called the quality of work life programs. I feel that this article greatly relates to this concept due to the fact that by engaging a companyââ¬â¢s associates they can determine what makes going to work irresistible. This is what the quality of work life programs do for the companies that use them. Therefore, we can see with the following chart that quality of work life programs could basically be the solution to the engagement survey problem. (Gayathiri Ramakrishnan, 2013). With what I have learned this week in regards to what the quality of work life programs are they are essentially expected to help enhance the personal lives of a companyââ¬â¢s associates and their functionality to more of an acceptable standard. Now with this said to determine the solution to the question of whether I feel the article discussed a prediction of a recovery, if a negative approach, or success, if a new launch or revamping of a current policy/approach, to this issue?â⬠(Schinker, 2015). I believe that with the concept that the end of the article ââ¬Å"Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?â⬠discussed that the quality of work life programs are the solution to the engagement survey issue and could become very effective in the long run for many companies. I also feel that as long as companies attempt to work with their associates this concept will become even better than the ââ¬Å"engagement surveyâ⬠concept. Therefore, I believe that as lon g as companies are trying to enhance their method of associate engagement and try to utilize some of the abundant resources accessible to them that they can handle their functionality issues successfully. Conclusion With all of the material from above I trust that the article ââ¬Å"Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?â⬠is an applicable article that completely displays that I understand what make this a management issue (Schinker, 2015). The rationale for this is due to the fact that the article expresses a procedure that is similar to the quality of work life programs, which are a management concept that we discussed this week. The quality of work life programs can also be used as a means for managers to enhance the lives of their associates and the inclusive functionality of the company. References Bersin, J. Essay --
Missouri Mandatory Reporting Laws Brandon Ruble Southwest Baptist University Missouri Mandatory Reporting Laws In a study performed by the National Center on Elder Abuse, Bureau of Justice in June 2013, a staggering 5,961,658 cases of elderly abuse occurred in 2010 (ââ¬Å"Elderly Abuseâ⬠, n.d. para 1). That is approximately 9.5% of Americaââ¬â¢s population. As the elderly become unable to protect themselves or their interests, they are increasingly reliant on the healthcare professional to advocate on their behalf. Missouri has implemented legislation that provides the healthcare professional with resources to report elderly abuse, neglect and exploitation. This report gives the healthcare provider tools including definitions associated with elder abuse, clinical signs of abuse, and actions necessary when abuse is suspected. According to Missouri legislation (ââ¬Å"Protective Services for Adultsâ⬠, n.d.) abuse is defined as ââ¬Å"the infliction of physical, sexual, or emotional injury or harm including financial exploitation by any person, firm or corporation (para. 4). Furthermore, neglect is ââ¬Å"the failure to provide services to an eligible adult by any person, firm or corporation with a legal or contractual duty to do so, when such failure presents either an imminent danger to the health, safety, or welfare of the clientâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (para. 4). Along with strict definitions of ââ¬Å"abuseâ⬠and ââ¬Å"neglectâ⬠, Missouriââ¬â¢s legislation also mandates that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦any person having reasonable cause to believe that there is a likelihood that, without protection, serious physical harm may occur to an eligible adult shall report information to the departmentâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Protective Services for Adultsâ⬠, n.d., para 6). It is therefore the duty of the registered nurse, as being th... ...e elder population. It is therefore necessary for the healthcare provider to become educated and thoroughly aware of the potential for elder adult abuse and neglect. Prevention of elder adult abuse is key, failing that, becoming the clientââ¬â¢s advocate in situations where abuse and or neglect are suspected becomes the most important task. It is not only the ethical responsibility of the healthcare provider to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect it is mandatory in Missouri. References Elderly Abuse Statistics. (2013, June 18).
